About Me

“If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay at home.” – James Michener

Welcome! I am Shannon and since recently graduating with my Masters of Science in Exercise and Sports Medicine, it has been my desire to explore a part of the world that most of people haven't been to. My journey begins with 3 weeks in India with the coolest twins on earth: Jamie and Michelle Newlon. Afterwards I head off to Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and finally Bali with one of my best friends, Heather Smith. I'll be gone from Aug 8th - Oct 27th which comes to a total of just under 3 months abroad!

It is my goal to share with you the significant stories of my trip including what I encounter, the people I meet, the bridges I bungee jump off of (just kidding Dad) and of course... PICTURES! Hopefully we will have a safe adventure through the "Far East". Feel free to comment, as I will be updating as often as possible. Thank you to all my friends and family who are supporting me on this once and a lifetime crusade!

Delhi

Delhi was incredible! I heard mixed reviews about the city but I was pleasantly surprised by my experience. Jamie and I arrived in the afternoon at the airport and decided to catch a cab to the hostel in the main bazaar district. We prepaid for the cab which costs about 360 rupees or roughtly 8 or 9 dollars for a 45 min taxi ride. Such a bargain! But as we were about to get into the cab, we were approached by these two German guys who wanted to share the taxi with us. We obliged since we are always down to save money. We ended up staying at the same hostel together and having a couple beers after checking in, which by the way... took forever cause the Main Bazaar district is madness! So many people and the streets are 5 feet wide. So we go to the top of this restaurant where we meet a couple other backpackers. 2 ladies from Ireland, 2 guys from Harvard law school studying with the supremem court here in Delhi, and a girl from England.

So we are a big group and decide to migrate to a bigger bar down the road and we are lauging and drinking and smoking sheesha, and eating thali. This has got to be one of the greatest things ever! Its a mix plate of indian food and costs about 3 dollars. So delicious! Time got away from us and I became super jet lagged at 9pm so we decided to call it a night. So sad we missed the end of the night because everyone was gonig to a local indian house party down the road but I literally felt sick I was so tired. So we went back to the hostel and crashed on out circular shaped bed. Lol.

The next morning we hired a taxi guy recommended to us from one of the guys the night before. He had to be at least 70 years old with a huge turban and a odd net for his beard that looked as if was cutting off his jugular but was totally kick ass!

Jamie, our driver Singh and I have a morning cup of chai
He took us to several places around Delhi and New Delhi, which of course are 2 separate cities. We saw a Sikh temple, the Bahai aka Lotus temple, the Red Fort, Humayun's Tomb, the Presidents buidling, the Indian Parliament, and my personal favorite: Akshardham temple.

The most amazing temple of all time: Akshardham. Unfortunately cameras are not permitted so this is the only shot I got from outside. Absolutely UNBELIEVABLE!
It was a long afternoon of sightseeing and by the time we got back to the hostel, ate dinner at our favorite restaurant/bar overlooking the main bazaar, it was time to pick Michelle up from the Airport! We took a taxi there and her plane arrived at 9:30 however, I mixed up the times and we arrived an hour late. I felt so bad cause she was just there waiting for us. She looks amazing and so tan from living in Guyana for the past 2.5 years. Despite being super tired, she was bright eyed and bushy tailed and talked the entire way back to the hostel.... and then some. We went to bed around 1am and had to get up at 5 so we could catch our ride up north to Rishikesh at 6am. Life of a backpacker....
Michelle is finally here! Shes so cool pretend talking on the hostel managers cell phone...
